Mongolia or bust for @CRY_UK

CRY Mongol Rally

One for the road.

This summer, Nico Mendoza-Sharman will be tackling the Mongol Rally and among the beneficiaries will be CRY.

Nico’s team, ‘Baby Don’t Yurt Me’, will attempt to drive a one litre Volkswagen Polo 10,000 miles, from Prague in the Czech Republic to Ulan-Ude in Siberia via Mongolia.

The event’s organisers write: “Any old dullard can purchase a 4×4 that could easily make it across the surface of the moon and drive a quarter of the world’s circumference, and that, is exactly what the Mongol Rally is not about.

“It’s about small. It’s about stupid. It’s about unsuitability. It’s about humour. We have purposely set the bar for engine size to a mere 1 Litre – or 1000cc. We shall allow up to a 1.2 for those of you who can’t handle a whole litre of courage …”

We’re hugely grateful that Nico and the team have selected CRY as one of the four charities they’re raising money for. You can support them by donating here.

Isa and Matthew raise nearly £6k running the London Marathon for @CRY_UK

Mother and son Isabel and Matthew Turner have raised more than £5,700 for CRY core funding by running in memory of Tom and Claire in this year’s London Marathon on Sunday, April 28.

In a first marathon for both, Matthew finished in 04:01:26 while Isa, who’d suffered a foot injury in training, showed great resilience to finish in 06:45:26.

Isa said afterwards: “Matthew was very fast and I was very slow and am in great pain but I’m so proud to have done it in memory of two such special people.”

A tremendous effort by both and their fund-raising page is still open here.

Isa and Matthew’s marathon London effort for @CRY_UK

Isa and Matthew,CRY London Marathon, April 2019

Isa and Matthew Turner (mother and son) are running the London Marathon on Sunday April 28 in memory of Claire and Tom.

They’ll be raising funds for CRY’s core programmes and also raising awareness of the charity’s screening programme.

It’s a first marathon for each of them and so will be tough but Matthew may hold a slight advantage, being 19 and a rower while Isa is 51 and recovering from a foot injury!

She said: “For the last few years I have been helping out at the CRY reception centre after the marathon so I really should know better. This is a bonkers idea! But it feels too important not to do it. I will run every step of the way with Tom and Claire in my heart.”

Matthew added: “CRY do such amazing work and I am delighted to be supporting them while running in memory of Tom and Claire. All the pain will be worth it for the huge impact the charity can achieve with the money raised.”

Ellen Clabburn said: “We’re very proud of what they are doing. It will be a brilliant achievement. We know Isa’s been struggling with her injury but we also know how determined they both are.”

You can support them here and if you are going to the event, please give them a big shout on the day.

Andrew Carter mile raises more than £700 for @CRY_UK #Ealing

Andrew Carter Memorial Mile 2018

About 60 runners took part in the Andrew Carter Memorial Mile on Saturday, September 1, raising more than £700 for Tom and Claire’s Fund and Cardiac Risk in the Young.

The event is held in memory of Andrew, who collapsed from a cardiac arrest during the Ealing Half Marathon in 2014. He died on October 1, 2014. The money raised supports heart screenings in Ealing sponsored by Tom and Claire’s Fund.

Sandra Courtney, one of the Ealing Half Marathon organisers, said: “It was a lovely day and it was great to raise such a large total again.”

Paul Clabburn said: “We are very grateful to all those who ran and to Andrew’s parents. Each year, those who take part play a significant role in ensuring that free CRY screenings can continue.”

This year’s screenings are due to take place in November.

More than £400 has been raised for Tom’s Fund and CRY by participants in the Andrew Carter Memorial Mile on Saturday, September 2.

Almost 50 runners took part in the event in Lammas Park, Ealing, which was hosted by Ealing Half Marathon CIC.

“We had a lovely morning in the sun” said Sandra Courtney, for the organisers. “Thank you to all the runners and supporters who attended. We raised the money in just an hour and we hope there’s more to be donated online.”

The event is held each year in memory of Andrew, an Ealing resident who passed away after the 2014 Ealing Half Marathon.

Paul Clabburn said: “Once again we are extremely grateful to all who took part and to Andrew’s parents for donating via Tom’s Fund, thereby supporting local heart screening for young people.”

The next screenings in Ealing will be held in November.
