You’ve done it – you’ve raised more than £100,000 for CRY

Tom and Claire

Claire wanted to raise £100,000 for CRY in Tom’s memory – and we asked you if you’d help to achieve that in memory of both Tom and Claire.

You’ve done that and more.

As of this morning, donations to what is now Tom and Claire’s Fund stand in excess of £110,000 since we first began fund-raising in 2008. There is still more money coming in.

All we can say is a huge “THANK YOU”.

Our focus will remain on working with CRY to provide free heart screenings for young people in west London. Our belief – Claire’s belief – is that screening can make a difference.

It can help to challenge a dreadful statistic – that 12 young people aged 14-35, like Tom, die each week from an undiagnosed heart condition.

Since we lost Tom in 2007, CRY’s figures suggest a further 4,500 young people will have died. The vast majority could have been saved with a simple test:

  • One in every 300 that CRY tests – and CRY has tested more than 70,000 young people – will be identified with a potentially life threatening condition.
  • One in every 100 will have a condition that is less serious but could cause problems in later life.

Like other health screening programmes, it can’t yet identify all those at risk. But in Italy, where screening is mandatory for all young people engaged in organised sport, they have reduced the incidence of young sudden cardiac death by 89%.

But for now, all we’d like to say once again is a huge “THANK YOU”.

Partners needed to support heart screenings for young people in Ealing

CRY postcard campaign

Tom’s Fund has sponsored free @CRY_UK heart screenings for young people every year since 2009.

In that time more than 1,000 young people have been screened, around 800 of them in and around Ealing. Although the majority will walk away reassured, others will need medical intervention.

It currently costs the Fund £3,500 in sponsorship to host a free screening day for 100 people.

Year on year, friends, family and supporters, generally local people, have supported us with fund-raising and donations.

That effort has enabled Tom’s Fund to raise more than £80,000 since 2008.  It’s on its way to its target of raising £100,000 by November 27, 2014, what would have been the end of Tom’s 21st birthday year.

If there are any Ealing businesses or organisations that would like to partner us and help to support future screenings we’d be glad to hear from you at thetomclabburnfund@gmail.com or via the message form here.

You can read more about Tom’s Fund on this site or on the Tom Clabburn Memorial Fund’s Cardiac Risk in the Young page here.

We have screenings organised for November 2014 and April 2015 in Ealing. We expect that, as usual, they will be oversubscribed.

Nationally, 12 young people a week aged 14-35 die of undiagnosed heart conditions. Tom was one of them. He was 14.

Screening works. It can save lives. Please help if you can.

Coffee and £19,000 to go …

CRY CP book sale May 2014

Unbowed under-cover: from left to right, Claire with helpers Rob Sanders, Jo Tucker, Martin Hale, Andy Howells, Elin Hale, Chris Tucker and Sue Howells.

With six months to go in Tom’s Fund’s attempt to raise £100,000 to provide more free heart screenings for young people, we are closing in on our target.

After all the brilliant recent support, we are now into the ‘teens’ and need around £19,000 to make the £100k that we’d love to mark the year during which Tom would have been 21.

For my part, rain failed to dampen our spirits – as we used to write in my old newspaper days – when we held our most recent book sale.

With the help of a gazebo belonging to Rob and Caro Sanders and lots of volunteers we managed to raise £870 at the event outside Munsons cafe in South Ealing.

A generous donation from Munsons took us over the £80,000 mark – all of which will go towards CRY’s heart screenings and research.

So hugest thanks once again to Mario and the baristas, customers and helpers who made it such a successful day.
