Raindrops keep falling on Claire’s head

CRY pop-up book sale June 2014

Sue Howells, Claire Prosser and Chris Pearson brave the rain.

Claire’s pop-up book sale raised a further £168 for CRY on Saturday – despite the torrential rain.

“I was surprised but really pleased by how much we raised,” said Claire. “I’m also very grateful to all those who bought books and especially to Sue and Chris for helping.”

The money adds to the £870 raised by Claire’s main book sale in May – which also had to contend with wet weather – and means that the two events have raised a grand total of £1038.

The sales take place outside Munson’s Coffee, St Mary’s Road. Ealing. All unsold books are donated to Oxfam in Ealing so nothing goes to waste.

Coffee and £19,000 to go …

CRY CP book sale May 2014

Unbowed under-cover: from left to right, Claire with helpers Rob Sanders, Jo Tucker, Martin Hale, Andy Howells, Elin Hale, Chris Tucker and Sue Howells.

With six months to go in Tom’s Fund’s attempt to raise £100,000 to provide more free heart screenings for young people, we are closing in on our target.

After all the brilliant recent support, we are now into the ‘teens’ and need around £19,000 to make the £100k that we’d love to mark the year during which Tom would have been 21.

For my part, rain failed to dampen our spirits – as we used to write in my old newspaper days – when we held our most recent book sale.

With the help of a gazebo belonging to Rob and Caro Sanders and lots of volunteers we managed to raise £870 at the event outside Munsons cafe in South Ealing.

A generous donation from Munsons took us over the £80,000 mark – all of which will go towards CRY’s heart screenings and research.

So hugest thanks once again to Mario and the baristas, customers and helpers who made it such a successful day.

Having your cake – and reading with it!

Claire’s report: Cake and book lovers flocked to our latest sale in aid of Tom’s fund on Tuesday December 3rd. The sale – our 12th – was held at the BBC where I worked full time until March this year.

Start of the book sale 2013

Start of the sale…

Hundreds of books had been donated and West London’s amateur bakers had been out in force too* – with the icing on the cake (as it were) going to these cupcakes decorated with books!

Yummy cupcakes

As ever these sales take a lot of effort – otherwise I would be organising them once a week! Hugest thanks go first to Ruth Akins who hosted the sale at the BBC and organised all the tables, setting up and teams of helpers. Others who played their part on the day were Vicky Pearson, Jacky Hems, Simon Wright, Sue Ellis, Angelique Halliburton, Lorna Donlan, Phill Thomas, Bridget Osborne, Sam Upton, Elspeth Morrison and Jane Kinghorn.

Lots of customers!

Thanks also go to former BBC colleagues – Annie Flury on Radio Five Live, Gillian Dear on Radio Four and the One Show for their contributions. We couldn’t do it without you!

So the grand total – yes I know you were wondering about that – was a wonderful £834 which will all go to funding screenings for young people in West London.

Keep your eyes on the site for the next sale which will probably be in the spring outside Munsons cafe in Ealing.

*Those bakers in full: Ruth Akins, Gina Bentley, Elin Hale, Faith Howells, Shona MacMillan, Alison Montgomery, Elspeth Morrison, Linda Panzer, Elizabeth Porter, Anne-Marie Reilly, Isabel Turner and Debbie Young.
