A book sale at the BBC’s New Broadcasting House headquarters raised £650 for Tom and Claire’s Fund and CRY.

The event, on Thursday, December 1, the second anniversary of Claire’s death, was organised by her friend and colleague Ruth Akins-Arulanandam.

“We had a wonderful contribution of books from 5Live (Jessica Latimer) and we also had an unexpected top up of from the Victoria Derbyshire show (Monica Soriano),” said Ruth.

“The lovely Lorna Donlon bought in some gorgeous chocolate cakes which were sold within the hour.

“The book sale wouldn’t have happened without Gillian Dear who organised the space and helped collect the books in the lead-up to the event. On the day we had Suzanne Yates, Jacky Hems, Mariita Eager, Anne Marie Ballantyne, Madeline Ferguson, Dhruti Shah and Smitha Mundasad helping to sell as much as they could in aid of CRY.

“It was a day tinged with sadness as it has been two years since the passing of our dear friend Claire. This made us all the more determined to raise as many funds as we could in memory of Claire and Tom.

“It was lovely to spend the day with Claire’s friends and former colleagues, remembering her; she is missed by so many people. The sale came to a wonderful end when we realised how much we had raised in aid of CRY.

“Suzanne Yates also took the opportunity to take the remaining books to Oxfam on Marylebone high street, something Claire used to do herself at the end of a book sale.”

Ellen Clabburn said: “We really appreciate the effort made by Ruth and all those who helped. It was a lovely thing to do as Mum specialised in book sales for CRY. They are such a good way to raise both funds and awareness.”

Christmas book sale success in aid of @CRY_UK

CRY BBC book sale December 2015

There was plenty of interest in the book sale in aid of CRY at the BBC.

A book sale in aid of Tom and Claire’s Fund at the BBC’s New Broadcasting House raised £437 on Tuesday, December 15.

‘It was a day of reminiscing as we all came together to remember our friend and colleague Claire Prosser, who passed away a year ago this month,” said Ruth Arulanandam, who organised the event.

“Many of our colleagues came to donate money in Claire’s memory and to learn more about CRY. Having helped Claire run the previous sales at the BBC, it felt right to carry on the tradition in her memory and, of course, to continue to raise money for the Claire and Tom fund.”

The cake making tradition also continued: “Lorna Donlon made brownies and Sam Upton made some mince pies which were all sold out by the end of the sale,” said Ruth.

Brownies and mince pies were also on offer.

She added: “We had plenty of helpers on the day, Isabel Turner and her son Felix, Jacky Hems, Suzanne Yates, Sam Upton, Jane Palmer, and my sister-in-law, Angeline Arulanandam.

“I must also mention those important people who made the sale happen; Jess Latimer at 5Live for collecting the books, Matthew Dickinson and Michael Angelo for transporting the books to London, Gillian Dear and Sue Ellis.”

Claire’s BBC Radio 4 documentary, ‘Life After Tom’, is now available on BBC iPlayer Radio.

You can find it here.

The programme, written and narrated by Claire, was first broadcast in October, 2008, and describes how she navigated the first 12 months after Tom’s death.

That it is now available on demand is due to the efforts of Claire’s friend – and producer of the programme – Linda Pressly.

Having listened to it again, it seems to me to have withstood the test of time and therefore stands as a fitting tribute to Claire, both as a mother and as a journalist.

Cake bake for CRY’s sake

CRY, BBC cake bake February 2015

Food for thought.

A cake bake at the BBC raised nearly £100 and plenty of awareness for Tom and Claire’s Fund and CRY on February 11.

BBC journalist Jasmine Coleman said:

“People in the BBC Newsroom came together to tuck into cake, take a moment to chat and raise money for Tom and Claire’s fund this week.

The BBC’s World Online team organises a fairly regular ‘bake-off’ to bring colleagues together and fundraise for different charities.

This time Tom and Claire’s Fund was the only choice.

Many of us who took part knew and loved Claire and were glad to be able to do something in her memory. Others had never met her but had heard of her work with the BBC’s Journalism Trainee Scheme and were interested to find out more about her efforts for Cardiac Risk in the Young.

The theme for the bake off this time around was ❤️ – a nod to the charity as well as Valentines Day coming up.

Yum!.

The delicious offerings included chocolate and marshmallow cupcakes by Helier, one of Claire’s former trainees, and white chocolate and cranberry ‘love’ cookies by Jasmine, who also completed the scheme. We couldn’t help but think that Claire would have enjoyed Vanessa’s boozy chocolate mousse, and Alix’s Seville Orange meringue pie, and David’s lime and coconut slices brightened up our break.

Together we managed to raise just under £94 – not bad for eating loads of cake and talking to friends. We certainly didn’t need a second lunch after that.”

Huge thanks to all concerned from Paul and Ellen x

The first screenings

Screenings, Brentford, 2009

The first free heart screenings for young people sponsored by Tom’s Fund were held over three days at Brentford Football Club in June 2009. After fund-raising for more than a year, around 300 people were tested as part of CRY’s first national screening tour.

Brentford’s then manager, Andy Scott, a CRY patron, supported the event. He was forced to stop playing football when diagnosed with a heart condition.
