Bibliophiles’ bonanza supports @CRY_UK

Spring book sale 2014

Book-lovers should head to South Ealing on Saturday, May 24th for a sale of new books at much reduced prices.

The annual Spring sale is being held by Claire in aid of Tom’s Fund and on past experience could help people top up their summer holiday reading while supporting Cardiac Risk in the Young.

All the money raised goes to fund the local free heart-screenings for young people run by CRY. This year’s screenings are scheduled for November.

The sale will be held outside Munsons Cafe at 73 St Mary’s Rd, London W5, from 10am-3pm.

Hitting the right note

Getting ready to raise the roof!

The LVS school in Ascot, Berkshire, has chosen to support Tom’s Fund as part of its Head’s Challenge.

It’s thanks to our Ealing friends Clive and Juliet Matthews – whose son Luke attends the school – who approached Head Teacher Christine Cunniffe.

Mrs Cunniffe said: “ I have witnessed first- hand lives being saved because young people have been screened. Tom was known personally to Juliet and Clive who sing in the choir and we collectively decided to hold the concert in Tom’s memory to raise awareness and contribute to the wonderful work the charity does.”

The first event is a night of songs from the staff and parents’ choir on May 20. There will be a wide range of styles and a performance of the first movement of Mozart’s piano concerto in D Minor by Head Teacher Christine Cunniffe and piano teacher James Bryant.

The concert starts at 7pm and takes place at the Britvic Theatre, LVS Ascot, London Road, Ascot, Berkshire SL5 8DR. Tickets cost £5 each and are available from the school reception or by ringing 01344 882770.

Join us and walk London’s Bridges to support @CRY_uk

Team Tom 2013

Team Tom VI – the 2013 Bridges squad.

The eighth CRY London Bridges walk is in two months time, on July 6.

It would be great if you could join us.

Raising awareness is just as important as raising funds so if you feel awkward about yet again asking people for cash, you don’t have to. Simply register, wear the T-shirt and walk.

More than 1,200 people took part last year, the biggest number to date. It’s not an endurance test, just a stroll for a couple of hours across the Bridges and a pleasant way to see some of London’s landmarks while raising CRY’s profile.

Full details and a registration form can be found by clcking here. Mark on your registration form that you are walking for Team Tom.

Hope to see you there!

Maid of money

CRY Scarlett

Students at the University of Bath took part in a Maid Cafe event recently, eating cakes, drinking tea and enjoying the entertainment – and Toms’ Fund will benefit.

The three friends who organised the costume cafe – which are mainly found in Japan but are becoming more popular over here – did all the baking themselves and made a profit of £81, split three ways into charities of their choice.

One of the main organisers, Scarlett, pictured above, had a personal reason for choosing to donate her share of the profits to CRY and Tom’s Fund in particular.

“I used to come round and have tea with Tom when we were small, and he was always making us laugh. I think it’s really important to get young people involved in fundraising for CRY and to go along and take advantage of the fanastic free check-ups they offer.”

Double first for Christine and Jamie

Jamie Gavin at Manchester

Jamie Gavin at the finish.

Our two runners in the Greater Manchester marathon, Christine Elliott and Jamie Gavin, did us proud.  Both got round in under four hours and raised £2,000 between them for Tom’s Fund and CRY.

Christine said of her first ever marathon: “The race was tough but I did enjoy it and was delighted to finish in under 4 hours. The support in Manchester was phenomenal and it had a great atmosphere. I was also really pleased to hit my fundraising target for CRY.”

It was also the first marathon for Jamie and he got round in 3 hours and 23 minutes.

He said:  “It’s probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done – a great experience to look back on but the last eight miles hurt a lot. I hit a series of horrible walls and just had to tell myself to keep going.  But I am really pleased to have got round in under three and a half hours and, more importantly, raised some money for Tom’s Fund and for CRY.”
