A month to go until the @CRY_UK Heart of London Bridges Walk #12aweek

Bridges Walk 2018

Some of Team Tom 2018.

This year’s Heart of London Bridges Walk takes place on Sunday, June 23, and we’d love to see you there as part of “Team Tom XII”.

You can register here. Be aware there’s a new start and finish point, both in Southwark Park, Gomm Road, London, SE16 2TX.

You don’t have to raise money unless you want to – just walk to show support for CRY and to raise awareness. Twelve young people aged between 14-35 die each week of undiagnosed heart conditions in the UK.

And if you want to be reminded of the impact, spend a couple of minutes here listening to CRY patron and former Brentford manager Andy Scott speak about the death from a cardiac condition of 28-year-old Bees technical director Robert Rowan last year.

Book sale helps to sell @CRY_UK message

Getting the message across at the Brentford Festival.

The sun shone and the crowds flocked to the Brentford Festival where a book sale in aid of Tom and Claire’s Fund attracted plenty of attention on Sunday, September 6.

The stall was organised by members of Claire’s book group; Anne Marie Reilly, Mariita Eager, Debbie Young, Justine O’Driscoll and Vanessa Boulter.

“We made £330 and, just as importantly, spoke to lots of people and handed out leaflets,” said Anne Marie. “Lots of people of all ages stopped to read the information even if they didn’t buy so all in all it was a very satisfying day.”

Claire raised £250 by running a second-hand book stall at the Brentford Festival in Blondin Park, Ealing, on Sunday, September 7.

She was delighted with the amount but also pleased at how people responded to the Tom’s Fund stand: “Many people either knew Tom directly or had heard of him and knew about CRY. Many more stopped and looked at our display so we hope that we have helped to raise awareness.”

Claire thanked all those who had helped on the day.

The first screenings

Screenings, Brentford, 2009

The first free heart screenings for young people sponsored by Tom’s Fund were held over three days at Brentford Football Club in June 2009. After fund-raising for more than a year, around 300 people were tested as part of CRY’s first national screening tour.

Brentford’s then manager, Andy Scott, a CRY patron, supported the event. He was forced to stop playing football when diagnosed with a heart condition.
